The best time to visit the Château de Castelnaud

From April the castle runs 10:00–19:00 on the tourist board’s grid, the trebuchet firings have started, the knights’ school runs in the spring holidays for ages 5 to 14, and the river is open. July and August
The high-summer band is 09:00–20:00, the longest opening of the year by a distance, and the nine o’clock start is the single most useful hour in the Castelnaud calendar — before the coaches, before the upper car park fills, before the stone gets hot. These are also the months of the summer show with sword combat and of the night show, and the months when bus line 338 reaches the village at all. September and autumn
September holds the 10:00–19:00 band and loses the August crowds, which makes it the month most repeat visitors choose. From 1 October to 11 November the castle runs 10:00–18:00, the trebuchet season plays out its last weeks, the knights’ school returns for the autumn holidays and the combined ticket with Marqueyssac stays valid to 11 November. Winter
From mid-November to the end of January the castle opens only in the afternoon, 14:00–17:00, with the Christmas period as the exception at 10:00–17:00 and 25 December at 14:00–17:00. The firings have stopped; the costume try-ons in the castle kitchen run October to March for ages 5 and over, and a Playmobil® exhibit appears. Winter is also the only window in which the private tour from Sarlat goes into Castelnaud: the operator’s own note says that from January to mid-February, when Beynac is closed, it substitutes this castle. The valley from above
The one experience that is purely seasonal in the weather rather than in a timetable is the balloon. Flights lift from Cénac, about three kilometres away, and the three hours include roughly an hour airborne over the castles and the river. Karin (Switzerland) described gliding silently over castle and river, with a small breakfast and homemade jam afterwards. The honest note is the language: the briefing and the commentary are in French. Barbara Patrice (United Kingdom) said the pilot made sure they understood the safety briefing despite her speaking none of it.
